Air Duct Cleaning in Washington

What Professional Air Duct Cleaning May Cover

The appropriate scope depends on where debris or contamination is found. Based on the system and its condition, the work may address supply and return ducts, registers and grilles, plenums, air handler housing, blower components, coils, or drain pans. Cleaning one visible register or a short section of ductwork may leave material elsewhere in the forced-air system.

Several related HVAC services address different conditions:

• Duct cleaning: Removes accumulated material from the system components identified in the work scope.
• Duct sealing: Addresses gaps and air leakage rather than contamination.
• Filter replacement: Helps capture particles entering the system but doesn’t remove existing duct buildup.
• Duct installation: Replaces or adds ductwork when cleaning isn’t the appropriate correction.
• Air balancing: Addresses how conditioned air is distributed among rooms.

When Is Duct Cleaning Worth Considering?

Air duct cleaning isn’t automatically required every year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends considering it when hard-surface ducts or HVAC components have substantial visible mold, the system has a vermin infestation, ducts contain excessive dust or debris, or particles are entering living spaces.

Before authorizing work, homeowners should:

• Request evidence: Ask to see the debris or contamination behind the recommendation.
• Confirm the scope: Get a written explanation of the components to be addressed and the total cost.
• Discuss underlying causes: Ask whether moisture, damaged ducts, filtration, or mechanical problems also need attention.
• Question added treatments: Don’t assume chemical biocides, sealants, or other treatments are a standard or necessary part of the service.

From Assessment to a Clear Work Scope

A responsible work scope should identify the affected components, explain how the home and HVAC system will be protected, and account for loosened material so it isn’t redistributed. If accessible areas show active moisture, wet insulation, damaged ducts, asbestos-containing materials, or a mechanical problem, another qualified service may be necessary instead of cleaning alone.

Before work begins, the scope should clarify which areas will be addressed and how conditions outside the authorized service will be communicated. That information gives you a practical basis for deciding how to proceed.
